The Assembly State of New York Proclamation
Recognizing
Dr. Patricia Campos-Medina
Whereas,
a great state is only as great as those individuals who give exemplary service to their community; and
Whereas,
Patricia Campos-Medina is an immigrant woman of indigenous Mayan Central American descent, born in the mountain town of Chirilagua, San Miguel, El Salvador. She immigrated to the US at the age of 14 to re-unite with her parents who were political refugees from the Salvadoran civil war of the 1980s; and
Whereas,
Dr. Patricia Campos-Medina is a political scientist and labor policy expert, currently serving as the executive director for the Worker Institute, School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University. The Worker Institute advances collective bargaining, union organizing and worker justice via research, policy innovation, training and education on contemporary labor issues, to generate innovative thinking and solutions to problems related to work, economy and society; and
Whereas,
Dr. Patricia Campos-Medina's research interest focuses on the intersection of race, immigration status and worker rights. She studies the social economy, worker owned cooperatives and others forms of collective power innovation by workers in precarious work arrangements. She is a co-researcher with CRIMT and is a member of the DISE Collective, a collective of Black and Brown feminist scholars focused on research that decolonizes and diversifies the field of political economy; and
Whereas,
all too often, such service goes unrecognized; Dr. Patricia Campos-Medina's impressive professional record, and more importantly, her dedicated and lifelong service to the community is indeed commendable; now, therefore be it
Proclaimed,
that as a duly elected member of the State Assembly of New York, I recognize that in
Dr. Patricia Campos-Medina
we have an outstanding individual, worthy of the esteem of both the community and the 30th Assembly District.
